Essential Ingredients for Spiced Beef Hummus

Crafting this flavorful dish requires a handful of simple, readily available ingredients. Each component plays a vital role in building the layered textures and deep, aromatic flavors that define this Mediterranean masterpiece. Below is an overview of the key ingredients; for precise measurements and printable instructions, refer to the detailed recipe card further down.
- Hummus: This forms the creamy, rich base of our dish. As mentioned, you can choose your preferred store-bought brand for convenience, or elevate the experience by making your own. Our Easy Lebanese Hummus recipe ensures a smooth, authentic taste that pairs perfectly with the spiced beef.
- Beef: Lean ground beef is our protein of choice for the savory topping. Its robust flavor stands up beautifully to the bold spices. For a lighter alternative without compromising on protein, feel free to substitute with ground turkey or ground chicken. These alternatives absorb the spices equally well and offer a different texture.
- Spices: The magic truly happens with this blend of warm Mediterranean spices. A carefully balanced mix of fragrant cinnamon, earthy allspice, a touch of piquant cayenne red pepper, vibrant paprika, and a hint of sweet clove infuses the beef with an irresistible depth and aroma. These spices are fundamental to achieving the authentic Middle Eastern flavor profile of the dish.
- Pine Nuts: These small, buttery nuts add a delightful crunch and a subtle, toasted flavor that complements the creamy hummus and savory beef. Toasting them properly brings out their full aroma and enhances their texture.
- Fresh Garnish: Freshly chopped tomatoes and parsley are not just for decoration; they add a crucial element of freshness, acidity, and herbaceousness that brightens the entire dish, cutting through the richness of the beef and hummus. A final drizzle of extra virgin olive oil enhances the flavors and adds a beautiful sheen.
Beyond these core ingredients, a few pantry staples like olive oil, fresh garlic, and sweet onion are essential for building the foundational flavors of the spiced beef. Together, these components create a harmonious and unforgettable culinary experience.

Crafting Your Hummus with Spiced Beef: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating this delicious Spiced Beef Hummus is a straightforward process that yields impressive results. Follow these simple steps to bring this Mediterranean delight to your table, whether you’re making homemade hummus or using a store-bought version.
Step 1: Prepare Your Hummus Base (If Making Homemade)
If you’re embarking on the homemade hummus journey, start by combining your chickpeas (garbanzo beans), freshly squeezed lemon juice, tahini, garlic cloves, and a good quality extra virgin olive oil in a food processor. Blend for about 30 seconds to 1 minute to achieve a creamy texture. For an extra smooth and airy hummus, continue blending for a bit longer. If the consistency seems too thick, gradually add a small amount of additional olive oil or a tablespoon of cold water while blending until it reaches your desired velvety smoothness. Once perfectly blended, transfer the hummus to a serving platter and set it aside, allowing the flavors to meld beautifully.
Step 2: Cook the Flavorful Spiced Beef Mixture
Begin by heating one tablespoon of olive oil (or clarified butter, also known as ghee, for an even richer flavor) in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped sweet onion and minced garlic, sautéing them gently until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant, typically for 3-5 minutes. This step builds the aromatic foundation for the beef.
Next, add the ground beef to the skillet. Reduce the heat to medium. Using a wooden spoon, break the ground beef apart into small crumbles as it starts to cook. As the beef begins to brown, sprinkle in the wonderful blend of spices: cinnamon, allspice, cayenne pepper, paprika, and clove. Stir these spices thoroughly into the beef, ensuring every piece is coated. Continue cooking until the ground beef is completely cooked through and no pink remains, which usually takes about 8-10 minutes. Once cooked, remove the skillet from the stove and carefully drain any excess fat. This keeps the dish from being overly greasy and allows the spiced beef flavors to shine.
Step 3: Toast the Pine Nuts to Golden Perfection
To add a delightful crunch and nutty aroma, toast your pine nuts. Heat a clean, dry large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the pine nuts and toast them, stirring frequently, for about 2-3 minutes. Keep a close eye on them, as they can burn quickly due to their high oil content. You’ll know they are ready when they turn a beautiful golden color in spots and release a fragrant, nutty aroma. Immediately remove them from the skillet and set them aside to cool.
Step 4: Assemble and Garnish Your Masterpiece
Now comes the exciting part – assembling your dish! If you haven’t already, spread your prepared hummus evenly across a serving platter, creating a generous base. Spoon the warm, spiced ground beef mixture over the hummus, distributing it evenly. Finally, lavishly garnish with the freshly toasted pine nuts, a scattering of freshly chopped tomatoes for brightness, and a sprinkle of vibrant fresh parsley. For a final flourish, drizzle a small amount of extra virgin olive oil over the top. Serve your magnificent Hummus with Spiced Beef and Toasted Pine Nuts immediately with warm pita bread wedges, fresh vegetable sticks, or your favorite crackers. Enjoy the delightful blend of creamy, savory, and fresh flavors!
Storage and Make-Ahead Tips
To enjoy leftovers of this delicious dish, store the hummus and spiced beef in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. This method helps maintain the freshness and texture of both components, preventing the hummus from absorbing too much moisture or the beef from drying out. When stored separately, they will remain fresh for up to 4 days. When ready to serve again, gently reheat the spiced beef on the stovetop or in the microwave until warm, then layer it over chilled or slightly warmed hummus and re-garnish with fresh toppings if desired.
For even easier meal prep, you can prepare the spiced beef mixture a day or two in advance. Cook and season the beef, let it cool completely, and then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The hummus can also be made ahead of time and stored. This way, assembly becomes a quick and simple process, perfect for impromptu meals or entertaining.
