Embrace Grilling Season with Flavorful Innovation
The sizzle of the grill, the aroma of smoky goodness wafting through the air – grilling season is officially here! While some adventurous souls embrace outdoor cooking year-round, for many, the warming weather signals the perfect time to dust off the barbecue. If you’re looking for a fresh, exciting way to kick off your grilling festivities, these Mediterranean Burgers are precisely what you need. They offer a delightful departure from routine, introducing a world of aromatic spices and refreshing sauces.
Grilling isn’t just about cooking; it’s a lifestyle. It’s an easy, low-cleanup method of preparing meals that frees you from the confines of the kitchen. Imagine spending quality time outdoors with your family, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, while dinner practically makes itself. We frequently toss a basket of seasonal vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, or asparagus onto the grill alongside our main course, sometimes even some chopped potatoes, creating a complete, nutritious meal with minimal fuss. This approach not only enhances the flavor of your food but also maximizes precious family moments in the backyard.
The Mediterranean Twist: Inspired by Tradition

What makes this burger so special? It’s a creative interpretation of the classic hamburger, infused with the vibrant, earthy flavors characteristic of Mediterranean cuisine. The inspiration for these patties comes from Kibbeh, a beloved Lebanese dish known for its rich spices and hearty texture. We’ve drawn from those traditional ingredients to craft a burger that is both familiar and excitingly new.
These flavorful patties are made with high-quality ground beef (we recommend 80/20 for the perfect balance of flavor and juiciness), toasted pine nuts for a subtle crunch and nutty aroma, finely chopped red pepper and onion for sweetness and texture, and a warming blend of cinnamon and cumin that truly defines the Mediterranean profile. This combination creates a patty that is deeply savory and aromatic, a true feast for the senses even before it hits the grill.
The serving suggestion truly sets this burger apart: forget the standard bun! These Mediterranean wonders are best enjoyed in a soft, pillowy pita pocket. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully and provides a light, authentic base. The burger is then adorned with crisp lettuce, juicy tomato slices, and thinly sliced red onion. But the true star is the creamy, cooling mint yogurt sauce, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the seasoned beef. For those who prefer a different touch, a spread of your favorite hummus on the pita also makes a fantastic addition, adding another layer of traditional flavor and creaminess. Whether you opt for smaller sliders, perfect for kids or appetizers, or four generous full-sized burgers, this recipe is incredibly versatile.
Celebrating Local: A Partnership with Ohio Beef

These Mediterranean Burgers with Mint Yogurt Sauce are also a wonderful way to celebrate Ohio Beef Month, typically observed in May. We recently had the privilege of spending time with the Ohio Beef Council, where we gained invaluable insight into the incredible dedication of Ohio’s beef farming families. It was an eye-opening experience to witness firsthand the exceptional care they provide to their animals, their unwavering commitment to environmental protection for future generations, and their tireless efforts to produce safe, healthy beef.
Ohio is home to a staggering 17,000 beef farming families, all contributing to a vital agricultural sector. It’s truly impressive to learn that Ohioans spend a remarkable $4.1 billion each year on beef – a testament to its popularity and status as a healthy, high-quality protein choice. By choosing Ohio Beef, consumers not only enjoy superior meat but also support local communities and sustainable farming practices that are at the heart of our agricultural heritage.
The Power of Protein: Beef’s Nutritional Benefits
Beyond its incredible flavor, beef is a powerhouse of nutrition, making it an excellent and healthy addition to your weekly diet. A modest 3-ounce serving of lean beef packs a punch, providing over 10 essential nutrients. This includes vital vitamins and minerals like iron, zinc, B vitamins, and selenium, which play crucial roles in energy production, immune function, and overall well-being. Furthermore, the same 3-ounce serving delivers half of your daily recommended value of protein, all for less than 150 calories.
Research consistently highlights the benefits of incorporating lean beef into a healthy diet. Studies show that regular consumption can help in lowering cholesterol levels, especially when paired with an active lifestyle. For those focusing on fitness, pairing exercise with a high-protein diet, rich in sources like beef, has been shown to be more effective in building and maintaining muscle mass, as well as promoting satiety. Beef is more than just a meal; it’s a foundation for a healthy, active life.

As the weather beckons you outdoors, this Mediterranean Burger with Mint Yogurt Sauce makes for a perfect, refreshing meal to throw on the grill. For a truly complete Mediterranean feast, consider pairing these delectable burgers with vibrant Lebanese green beans (Lubee), a fresh and zesty tabbouleh salad, and a generous scoop of creamy homemade hummus. This combination will transport your taste buds straight to the shores of the Mediterranean!
Mediterranean Burger with Mint Yogurt Sauce Recipe
By Julia Jolliff
This Mediterranean Burger with Mint Yogurt Sauce is a fun twist on traditional hamburgers using your favorite Mediterranean flavors and ingredients.
Prep Time: 10 mins
Cook Time: 10 mins
Total Time: 20 mins
Servings: 4 servings (yields 8 sliders or 4 large burgers)
Ingredients
For the Burgers:
- 1 lb. ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- 1/4 cup pine nuts
- 1/4 cup red pepper, seeds removed, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon olive oil (for patties)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 2 Tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
For the Mint Yogurt Sauce:
- 1 cup plain yogurt (Greek yogurt for thicker consistency)
- 1/2 cup cucumber, finely chopped
- 2 Tablespoons fresh mint, chopped
- (Optional: 1 tsp olive oil, pinch of salt and pepper to taste)
For Serving:
- 4-8 pita pockets (depending on burger size)
- Sliced tomatoes
- Sliced red onion
- Lettuce leaves
Instructions
- Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, pine nuts, chopped red pepper, finely chopped red onion, egg, olive oil, salt, black pepper, cinnamon, cumin, and chopped parsley. Mix thoroughly with your hands until all ingredients are well combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Shape the ground beef mixture into 2-inch patties for sliders (approximately 1/4 cup of meat per slider, making about 8 sliders) or into 4 larger burger patties.
- Place the patties on the preheated grill. Cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. For medium-rare, aim for an internal temperature of 130-135°F (54-57°C).
- While the burgers are grilling, prepare the mint yogurt sauce: In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt, finely chopped cucumber, and fresh chopped mint. Stir well to combine. You can add a small drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper if desired. Set aside.
- Once the burgers are cooked, transfer them to a plate. Lightly warm the pita pockets on the grill for about 30 seconds per side, if desired.
- To serve, open each pita pocket and place a burger inside. Add slices of fresh tomato, red onion, and a few lettuce leaves. Finish with a generous drizzle of the homemade mint yogurt sauce.
Notes
- Adjust the amount of cinnamon and cumin to your personal taste. For an extra kick, a pinch of cayenne red pepper can be added to the burger mixture.
- For an alternative topping, try spreading a layer of creamy hummus inside the pita pocket instead of, or in addition to, the mint yogurt sauce.
- If pita bread isn’t your preference, these Mediterranean burgers are equally delicious served on regular slider buns or traditional hamburger buns.
