Our Unforgettable Colorado Family Adventure: From Denver’s Vibrancy to Steamboat Springs’ Serenity

After an incredible week and a half exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Colorado, we’ve finally returned home, our hearts full and our cameras brimming with memories. If you’ve been following my Instagram feed, you’ve already had a glimpse into our adventures in both the dynamic city of Denver and the charming mountain town of Steamboat Springs. But those snapshots only tell a fraction of the story; there’s so much more to share about this truly magical state.

Colorado holds a special place in my heart, a connection forged in childhood. Growing up, my family would visit Colorado every four to five years for spirited family reunions, and with each trip, my love for its majestic mountains and invigorating active lifestyle grew exponentially. The sheer, unparalleled beauty that Colorado boasts is unlike anything I’ve encountered anywhere else in the world. It had been many years since I last attended a family gathering in the Centennial State, so when the opportunity arose for another reunion, I eagerly seized the chance. I am incredibly grateful that we made the decision to go, not just to reconnect with cherished family members but also to immerse ourselves in the magnificent outdoors that Colorado offers in abundance. This journey marked Mike’s inaugural visit to Colorado, and knowing his passion for anything involving hiking, biking, and rafting, I had an unwavering feeling that he would fall head over heels for its charm – and I was absolutely right.

Denver & The Front Range: A Warm Welcome and Culinary Delights

Our adventure commenced in the vibrant Denver area, a perfect starting point for our exploration. We were incredibly fortunate to have a personal tour guide in my Dad’s best friend, who resides near Denver. His local expertise was invaluable, as he not only led us to some of Colorado’s most stunning sites but also treated us to some truly delicious homemade meals. One particular recipe, Columbian Steak with Aji Sauce, left such an impression on me that I absolutely had to get the recipe. I promise to share it with all of you on my site very soon – it was that good!

And speaking of unforgettable experiences, I must mention his fires for s’mores. They were simply extraordinary, far surpassing anything I’ve ever managed to create back home in Illinois. There’s something truly special about gathering around a perfectly built fire, under the vast Colorado sky, with the crisp mountain air enhancing every crackle and pop. The aroma of burning wood mingled with melting chocolate and toasted marshmallows created a quintessential outdoor experience that became an instant highlight.

Scenic Mountain Train Ride

Among the many wonderful activities, Will’s absolute favorite was an enchanting train ride through the heart of the mountains. The rhythmic chug of the train as it snaked through valleys and ascended rugged slopes offered unparalleled views of Colorado’s dramatic scenery. From lush green forests to towering peaks, every turn revealed a new postcard-perfect vista, making it a truly memorable experience for all of us, especially our little adventurer.

The Majestic Garden of the Gods

One of my personal highlights was undoubtedly visiting the awe-inspiring Garden of the Gods. This National Natural Landmark near Colorado Springs is a geological marvel, boasting towering sandstone rock formations that defy description. We arrived just as a storm began to roll in, creating a dramatic and utterly breathtaking scene. The dark, brooding clouds provided a striking contrast against the vibrant rusty red of the ancient rocks, making for an unforgettable photographic opportunity and a truly humbling experience. Walking amongst these natural giants, sculpted by millions of years of erosion, felt like stepping into another world.

A Glimpse of Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Our journey continued with a quick, but impactful, stop at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre. While I was a little bummed that we didn’t get to experience a live concert there – seeing a show at Red Rocks remains a definite bucket list item for me – I was still thrilled to simply visit and soak in the atmosphere. The natural acoustics and the stunning backdrop of these colossal red rock formations make it one of the most unique and revered concert venues in the world. Even without a performance, the sheer scale and beauty of the place are incredibly impressive, offering panoramic views of the Denver skyline in the distance.

To cap off our delightful time in the Denver area, we indulged in a fantastic brunch high up in the mountains. There truly is nothing quite like starting your day with a delicious meal, surrounded by the stunning vistas of the Rockies and breathing in the crisp, clean mountain air. The combination of incredible food and an unparalleled natural setting created a moment of pure bliss and relaxation.

The Scenic Route to Steamboat Springs: Rocky Mountain National Park

Our Denver adventures were just the beginning as we embarked on the next leg of our journey, making our way towards the picturesque town of Steamboat Springs. The drive itself was an experience, as we opted to take Trail Ridge Road, which magnificently winds its way through the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park. Let me tell you, this drive is absolutely worth every single mile! It’s an iconic route that offers some of the most spectacular high-alpine scenery in the entire country, with elevations reaching over 12,000 feet. The changing landscapes, from verdant forests to vast tundra, are breathtaking, and we even spotted some wildlife along the way, adding to the magic of the drive. The panoramic views of towering peaks, glacial lakes, and sweeping valleys left us utterly speechless, reinforcing why Colorado is such a beloved destination for nature enthusiasts.

Steamboat Springs: A Mountain Paradise for Adventure Seekers

Steamboat Springs proved to be the perfect little mountain ski resort town, offering an abundance of activities even in the non-winter months. Nestled in the Yampa Valley, it exudes a laid-back charm combined with endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. We dedicated a significant portion of our time here to hiking, exploring various trails that led us to stunning viewpoints. The views we encountered were nothing short of spectacular, with expansive landscapes stretching out before us, inviting us to breathe deeply and appreciate the untouched wilderness. Every trail offered a fresh perspective on the rugged beauty of the Rockies, from dense pine forests to open meadows dotted with wildflowers.

Thrilling Alpine Slide and Gondola Rides

For anyone planning a visit to Steamboat Springs, there are two activities that I wholeheartedly recommend adding to your itinerary: the exhilarating alpine slide and a scenic gondola ride up the mountain. The alpine slide offers a thrilling descent, allowing you to control your speed as you wind down the mountain on a specially designed track, surrounded by spectacular natural beauty. It’s an activity that brings out the inner child in everyone, offering both excitement and stunning views.

The gondola ride, on the other hand, provides a more serene experience, lifting you effortlessly to the summit of Mount Werner. From the top, the panoramic views of the Yampa Valley and the surrounding peaks are absolutely magnificent. It’s the perfect opportunity to capture breathtaking photos, enjoy a peaceful moment, or simply marvel at the vastness of the Colorado landscape. Both activities offer unique perspectives and contribute to an unforgettable Steamboat Springs experience, cementing its reputation as a year-round destination for fun and relaxation.

By the time we finally returned home, we were delightfully exhausted, but the trip to Colorado had been more fulfilling and magnificent than we could have ever imagined.
