Slow Cooker Turkey Quinoa Chili: Your Ultimate Weeknight Companion
We are thrilled to share with you a truly delicious, incredibly hearty, and remarkably healthy chili recipe today: our signature Slow Cooker Turkey Quinoa Chili. This isn’t just another chili recipe; it’s a testament to the power of hands-off cooking, allowing you to go about your busy day while your crockpot works its magic. It’s no secret that the slow cooker has become a kitchen staple for its ability to transform simple ingredients into deeply flavorful meals with minimal fuss. And this turkey chili is a prime example, ingeniously using quinoa to introduce a delightful texture while boosting its protein and fiber content, making it exceptionally satisfying.
One of the many appealing aspects of this Slow Cooker Turkey Quinoa Chili is its incredible versatility. While our recipe features classic black beans and hominy for a robust base, feel free to get creative with whatever beans you have in your pantry. Kidney beans, chickpeas, or even cannellini beans would all make fantastic additions, each contributing its own unique flavor and texture profile. For the meat, we opt for lean ground turkey, which keeps the chili lighter without sacrificing any of the rich, savory taste. However, if you prefer, ground beef works equally well. And for our vegetarian friends, simply omit the meat and perhaps add an extra can of your favorite beans or some plant-based crumbles to maintain that fulfilling bulk.

Why You’ll Love This Healthy Turkey Quinoa Chili
Effortless Cooking for Busy Lifestyles
The beauty of a slow cooker meal lies in its simplicity. After a quick sauté of the turkey and a toss of ingredients into the pot, your work is essentially done. This means no hovering over the stove, no constant stirring, and no last-minute rush to get dinner on the table. For parents, busy professionals, or anyone looking to reclaim their evenings, this turkey quinoa chili is a game-changer. It’s the ultimate “set it and forget it” meal that promises a warm, home-cooked dinner even on your most hectic days.
A Nutritional Powerhouse
- Lean Protein from Turkey: Ground turkey is an excellent source of lean protein, essential for muscle building and satiety, without the higher fat content often found in other ground meats.
- Quinoa for Fiber and Complete Protein: Quinoa is a superfood for a reason. It’s one of the few plant-based foods that offers a complete protein profile, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids. It’s also rich in fiber, which aids digestion, helps regulate blood sugar, and keeps you feeling full longer. Its slight chewiness adds a wonderful contrast to the chili’s robust texture.
- Bean-Powered Goodness: Black beans and hominy (or your bean of choice) significantly boost the fiber, protein, and complex carbohydrate content. They contribute to the chili’s satisfying texture and provide a host of essential vitamins and minerals.
- Loaded with Flavor, Not Calories: Packed with aromatic spices like chili powder, cumin, coriander, and paprika, this chili delivers an explosion of flavor. A secret ingredient, a touch of cocoa powder, adds a subtle depth and richness that elevates the entire dish, creating a complex flavor profile that belies its healthy nature.
Unmatched Versatility and Customization
Chili is inherently one of the most versatile dishes, and this recipe is no exception. It’s a fantastic canvas for your culinary creativity. Want to add more vegetables? Feel free to toss in some diced bell peppers, sweet corn, zucchini, or even some sweet potato cubes for extra nutrients and color. Each addition only enhances the flavor and health benefits.
The spice level is also entirely adjustable. For those who enjoy a little kick, a pinch of cayenne pepper or a finely diced jalapeño can be added. If you prefer a milder taste, simply adjust the chili powder to your liking. The robust blend of spices ensures a flavorful experience regardless of the heat.
The Perfect Dish for Gatherings and Game Day
As the big football game approaches, or for any casual gathering, this chili is truly the perfect meal. It cooks slowly, freeing you up to socialize with your guests instead of being tethered to the kitchen. Set up a chili bar with various toppings, and let everyone customize their bowl. It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that allows you to enjoy the company and the game, stress-free.

Elevate Your Chili with Irresistible Toppings
One of the best parts about serving chili is the opportunity to load it up with your favorite garnishes. These not only add an extra layer of flavor but also introduce contrasting textures that make each bite more exciting. Here are some fantastic ideas to elevate your Slow Cooker Turkey Quinoa Chili:
- Creamy Delights: A dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt adds a cool, tangy contrast that perfectly balances the chili’s spice.
- Cheesy Goodness: Shredded cheddar, Monterey Jack, or a Mexican blend cheese melts beautifully into the warm chili, providing a rich, savory element.
- Fresh Herbs: Fresh cilantro, finely chopped, adds a bright, herbaceous note that cuts through the richness.
- Aromatic Onions: Sliced green onions (scallions) offer a mild oniony bite and a pop of color. Diced red onion can provide a sharper crunch for those who like it.
- Crunch Factor: Crushed tortilla chips, cornbread croutons, or even a side of warm cornbread are essential for scooping up every last bit of chili and adding a satisfying crunch.
- Extra Heat: For the spice lovers, thinly sliced jalapeños (fresh or pickled) or a drizzle of your favorite hot sauce can take the heat up a notch.
- Creamy Avocado: Diced avocado adds a creamy, healthy fat that mellows the flavors and adds a luxurious touch.
- Salsa or Pico de Gallo: A spoonful of fresh salsa or pico de gallo brings a vibrant, zesty freshness to your bowl.
With such a variety of toppings, every serving becomes a personalized culinary adventure!

Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground turkey
- 1/2 sweet onion, chopped
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 4 oz. diced chiles
- 1 can diced tomatoes (14.5 oz)
- 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed (15 oz)
- 1 can hominy, drained and rinsed (15 oz)
- 2 Tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder (unsweetened)
- 2 Tablespoons chili powder
- 2 teaspoons cumin (ground)
- 1 teaspoon coriander (ground)
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, {optional, for heat}
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon oregano (dried)
- 2 cups quinoa, cooked according to package directions
- For Garnish (Optional):
- Cilantro, fresh, chopped
- Shredded Cheese
- Sour Cream or Greek Yogurt
- Green Onion, sliced
- Crushed Tortilla Chips
- Sliced Jalapeños
Instructions
-
In a medium skillet, cook the ground turkey over medium heat until it’s golden brown and fully cooked through. Drain any excess fat. Add the cooked turkey to your slow cooker.
-
To the slow cooker, add the chopped sweet onion, minced garlic, diced chiles, diced tomatoes (undrained), drained and rinsed black beans, drained and rinsed hominy, tomato paste, cocoa powder, chili powder, cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper (if using), paprika, and oregano. Stir all ingredients well to combine.
-
Cover and cook on low for 4 hours, or on high for 2-3 hours, or until the chili is heated through and flavors have melded.
-
While the chili is cooking, prepare the quinoa according to the package instructions.
-
Once the chili is ready to serve, spoon a generous scoop of cooked quinoa into the bottom of each bowl. Ladle the hot chili over the quinoa. Top with your favorite garnishes such as fresh cilantro, shredded cheese, a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt, and sliced green onion. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
- This chili is excellent for meal prepping and freezes beautifully. For best results, freeze the chili without the quinoa. When you’re ready to enjoy it, simply thaw and reheat the chili, then cook fresh quinoa to serve alongside.
- Feel free to substitute ground beef or ground chicken for the turkey if preferred. For a vegetarian option, omit the meat and consider adding extra beans or your favorite plant-based protein crumbles.
- Experiment with different varieties of beans, such as red kidney beans, pinto beans, or cannellini beans, to discover your favorite combination.
- If you like a thicker chili, you can mash a portion of the beans against the side of the slow cooker before serving, or add a cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp cold water) during the last 30 minutes of cooking on high.
