An Exciting New Chapter: Our Family is Growing!
Good morning, dear readers! Today, I am absolutely bursting with joy and a profound sense of relief to finally share a very special secret I’ve been holding close to my heart for the past fifteen weeks. It’s an announcement that heralds a beautiful new chapter for our family, and one I know many of you will be thrilled to hear!

Will is Going to Be a Big Brother! Our Family is Expanding!
Yes, you read that right! Our sweet Will, who has brought so much light and laughter into our lives, is officially going to be a big brother! Our cherished family of three is joyfully preparing to welcome a new addition, transforming into a bustling family of four this coming February. The anticipation is truly palpable, and we can hardly wait to meet the newest member of our clan.
I am now approximately fifteen weeks into my pregnancy, and I am incredibly grateful to report that I am feeling absolutely wonderful! This current state of well-being is a tremendous relief, especially considering that just a couple of weeks ago, my experience was quite different. While I am fortunate to typically avoid the debilitating effects of morning sickness, one consistent challenge I face during the first trimester is an almost indescribable, extreme exhaustion. This time around, that exhaustion was compounded significantly by an unforeseen life change. The very same week I discovered I was pregnant, my daily commute to work dramatically shifted from a manageable fifteen minutes to a daunting forty-five minutes or even longer. This added travel time, coupled with the profound fatigue of early pregnancy, made each day an exercise in endurance.
Navigating the First Trimester: Exhaustion and Unexpected Aversions
The first trimester of pregnancy is often a period of immense change, both physically and emotionally. For me, beyond the relentless fatigue, this journey was marked by a series of peculiar food aversions. It felt as though almost nothing sounded appealing. Dishes I typically loved, ingredients I frequently cooked with, suddenly became repulsive. Many evenings, the mere thought of stepping into the kitchen was enough to trigger a wave of nausea. The idea of preparing or even eating something as simple as chicken, or a fresh, crisp salad, would send shivers down my spine. It was a challenging time for someone who loves to cook and share recipes, as my own culinary world felt utterly turned upside down.
Meals became a creative, often desperate, attempt to find anything that would satisfy my body without upsetting my stomach. Bland foods, specific comfort dishes, or even just a very limited rotation of ‘safe’ items became my go-to. I spent countless evenings simply trying to get through the day, prioritizing rest above all else. Needless to say, I am profoundly relieved to be past the initial hurdles of the first trimester and am truly starting to feel like myself again. The return of my energy levels and a more predictable appetite have brought immense joy and a renewed sense of normalcy to my daily life.
The Impact on A Cedar Spoon: A Temporary Pause, A Renewed Vision
Many of you may have subtly noticed a change in the frequency of my recipe shares over the past few months. While it has been genuinely disappointing to have to step back, even temporarily, from A Cedar Spoon, it was an absolutely necessary decision. During those early, challenging weeks, my primary focus had to be on navigating my pregnancy, enduring full days of work, and managing the demands of an extended daily commute. My energy reserves were completely depleted, leaving little left for my passion projects and the creation of new content for this beloved community.
I want to thank you all for your understanding and continued support during this quieter period. It truly means the world to me. Now, as I transition into the more energetic second trimester, my hope is to gradually ramp up my energy and enthusiastically get back into the kitchen! And speaking of the kitchen, you might just notice a delightful trend emerging in the coming months: prepare to see a few more Italian dishes popping up here on the blog. This growing baby has developed a distinct taste for Italian cuisine – and honestly, can you blame him or her? There’s something undeniably comforting and universally appealing about a hearty pasta dish or a perfectly seasoned pizza, and right now, those flavors are hitting all the right notes for both baby and me!
Future Flavors: Italian Cravings and Seasonal Delights
The cravings have been quite specific, leading me down delightful culinary paths that I can’t wait to share. From rich, slow-cooked sauces that simmer for hours, filling the house with an aroma of pure comfort, to fresh, vibrant antipasto platters brimming with Mediterranean goodness, Italian food has truly been a lifeline. It’s a cuisine that offers warmth, satisfaction, and a touch of indulgence, perfectly suiting the needs of a growing body and a craving palate. Expect to see recipes inspired by classic regional dishes, perhaps some lighter, healthier interpretations, and certainly plenty of options that cater to busy weeknights – because as a soon-to-be mother of two, efficiency in the kitchen will be more crucial than ever!
This phase of pregnancy has not only brought forth specific food cravings but also a renewed appreciation for the simple pleasures of home cooking and nourishing meals shared with loved ones. It’s a powerful reminder of how food connects us, comforts us, and fuels us through life’s most transformative moments. I am eager to translate these personal experiences into inspiring and delicious recipes that you can incorporate into your own family’s meals.
Embracing Autumn: A Season of Comfort and Culinary Inspiration
In other news, beyond the joyous anticipation of our new arrival, I am also incredibly excited that fall is just around the corner! There’s a distinct crispness in the air, a subtle shift in the light, and a promise of cozy evenings that makes this season truly magical. I cannot wait to start whipping up all things pumpkin, apple, and a glorious array of other comforting fall ingredients. Think warm spices, roasted root vegetables, hearty stews, and delightful baked goods that fill the home with an inviting aroma.
Fall recipes hold a special place in my heart, evoking feelings of warmth, family gatherings, and the simple joy of seasonal eating. From classic pumpkin pies and apple crisps to savory dishes featuring squash, sweet potatoes, and robust herbs, the autumn pantry is a treasure trove of inspiration. This year, with a baby on the way and a busy toddler, I’ll be particularly focused on creating nourishing, comforting meals that are both delicious and relatively easy to prepare. Whether it’s a slow-cooker chili perfect for a chilly evening or a wholesome apple cake to enjoy with a cup of tea, I’m ready to dive back into the comforting embrace of fall cooking.
Thank you, as always, for being such an integral part of the A Cedar Spoon community. Your support, encouragement, and enthusiasm for food and family mean the world to me. I’m so excited to share this incredible journey with you and look forward to bringing you many more delicious recipes and updates as we prepare for our family’s newest adventure.
With much love and excitement,
Julia
