My connection with Costa Rica began twelve years ago, during a transformative college study abroad program. Living with a warm Costa Rican family in a quaint town just outside San Jose, I immersed myself in the local culture, learning Spanish and embracing the rhythms of daily life. Every weekend became an opportunity for discovery, exploring a new corner of this magnificent country. One of Costa Rica’s most remarkable attributes is its manageable size; you can traverse most of its diverse landscapes in half a day or less. This accessibility makes it an ideal destination for those eager to experience everything from cloud forests to volcanoes, and, of course, its renowned Pacific and Caribbean coastlines.
It was during this initial adventure that I first encountered Tamarindo. My friends and I were drawn to its reputation as a surfer’s paradise and its pristine beaches, creating a wealth of cherished memories that have stayed with me ever since. The allure of its consistent waves and the vibrant atmosphere left an indelible mark, making it a place I always knew I would return to.
Tamarindo’s Transformation: A Blend of Old Charm and New Vibrancy
Returning to Tamarindo with Mike a few weeks ago for a five-day escape was a journey back in time, yet into a subtly transformed landscape. The Tamarindo I remembered from twelve years prior was a rustic haven of dirt roads and humble beachfront bars. Today, while still retaining its undeniable charm, it boasts paved roads, an abundance of diverse restaurants, and a lively array of shops catering to international visitors. This evolution speaks to Tamarindo’s growing popularity as a premier destination in Costa Rica, attracting travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation.
Despite these developments, the essence of Tamarindo remains wonderfully untouched. The very reasons I fell in love with it—the pristine beaches, the incredibly fresh food, the breathtaking sunsets, and the pervasive laid-back “Pura Vida” lifestyle—were exactly as I had left them. For surfing enthusiasts, Tamarindo continues to be a mecca. While Mike and I are enthusiastic, albeit novice, surfers who’ve enjoyed lessons and board rentals across various beach destinations, we still have a long way to go. On this trip, I delighted in watching the skilled surfers effortlessly navigate the waves, living vicariously through their exhilarating rides.
Discovering Tamarindo’s Charm in the Green Season
Our stay was at “15 Love,” a truly charming bed and breakfast located conveniently as you enter Tamarindo town, notably close to the famous Witches Rock Surf Camp – a landmark that has stood the test of time since my first visit. We strategically planned our trip for early May, marking the onset of Costa Rica’s “green season” (often referred to as the rainy season). This timing offers a delightful advantage: the bustling crowds of peak season have dissipated, making for a more serene experience, and accommodation prices are often more favorable. While rain showers are indeed common, they are typically brief, lasting perhaps an hour at most, often occurring in the late afternoon or evening, leaving the rest of the day open for exploration and sunshine.
The green season showers are not merely fleeting inconveniences; they contribute significantly to the enchanting ambiance of Tamarindo. The lush landscape becomes even more vibrant, and the occasional tropical storm creates dramatic, awe-inspiring backdrops. We found immense joy in finding a cozy spot during happy hour, sipping on a cold Imperial beer (Costa Rica’s beloved local brew) as we watched the storm clouds roll in over the Pacific. These moments, filled with the raw power and beauty of nature, often yielded some of the most spectacular photographic opportunities, showcasing the unique majesty of Costa Rica’s tropical climate.

There’s a certain magic to witnessing a tropical storm from the comfort of a beachfront bar, feeling the cool breeze and watching the dramatic skies, an experience that truly connects you to the raw, untamed spirit of Costa Rica.
A Culinary Awakening: Fresh Flavors of Costa Rica
One of the absolute highlights of our stay in Tamarindo was the incredible food, particularly the breakfasts served daily at our bed and breakfast. As many of you who follow my Instagram might recall, I was utterly smitten with the daily spread. The abundance of fresh, ripe mango, sweet pineapple, and freshly squeezed papaya juice was nothing short of heavenly. Costa Rica’s tropical climate yields an unparalleled bounty of fruits, each bursting with flavor far beyond what you find in most grocery stores back home. This daily dose of natural sweetness and vitamins was the perfect start to our adventurous days. The vibrant colors and refreshing tastes truly captured the essence of local produce, inspiring me to recreate some of these tropical flavors. With a rare five days entirely to ourselves – yes, five blissful days without our children, a feat we’re still wondering how we managed – Mike and I dedicated ample time to the quintessential beach relaxation. Among the many stunning beaches we explored, Playa Conchal quickly became a favorite. Its uniqueness lies in its sand, which is not sand at all, but rather countless tiny, crushed seashells, giving the beach a distinct shimmering quality. The water here is an almost unbelievable bright, clear teal, inviting you to wade in and soak up the sun. For a true beach aficionado, Playa Conchal is nothing short of paradise.
A word of caution for those planning a visit to this exquisite locale: reaching Playa Conchal requires driving along another beach, which can be challenging depending on the tides and the condition of your vehicle. Ensure your car is suitable for navigating unpaved, potentially sandy or rocky terrain to avoid any unexpected hiccups. However, the journey, however rugged, is undeniably worth it for the reward of this unparalleled coastal gem.
The Taste of the Tropics: Fresh Coconuts
While basking in the glory of Playa Conchal, or any of Costa Rica’s incredible beaches, remember to stay hydrated the local way. Forget store-bought coconut water; nothing compares to the refreshing taste of a freshly cut coconut. Vendors are often found along the beaches, ready to expertly cleave open a young green coconut for you to drink directly from. It’s a truly authentic and incredibly refreshing experience, a simple pleasure that perfectly encapsulates the “Pura Vida” vibe.
Adrenaline and Awe: An Unforgettable Costa Rican Adventure
On almost all of our vacations, we make it a point to incorporate an excursion that allows us to truly connect with the country’s spirit, engaging in something both adventurous and active. Since this was Mike’s first time experiencing the full spectrum of Costa Rica’s natural wonders, we orchestrated a jam-packed day of exhilarating activities. Our adventure began with horseback riding through scenic trails, offering stunning views and a connection to the land. This was followed by an adrenaline-pumping tubing session down a river brimming with exciting rapids, a perfect blend of thrill and natural beauty. The day escalated further with a series of ziplining experiences, culminating in a daring rappel down a magnificent waterfall. The ziplining, in particular, was the most exhilarating I have ever experienced on any trip, offering unparalleled views and an incredible rush.
Rappelling down the face of a rock wall alongside a thundering waterfall was both terrifying and utterly awesome, a true test of courage rewarded with an unforgettable perspective. We concluded our epic day with a well-deserved mud bath, rich in volcanic minerals known for their detoxifying properties, followed by a relaxing soak in natural hot springs. It was an exhausting yet incredibly rewarding day, perfectly showcasing the diverse fun and natural splendor that Costa Rica has to offer.
Chasing Sunsets: Tamarindo’s Daily Masterpiece
As anyone who follows my Instagram can attest, I harbor an undeniable obsession with sunsets. There’s something uniquely magical about the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky with an ever-changing canvas of vibrant hues. Mike, playfully, often claims that after you’ve captured ten pictures of a sunset, they all begin to look the same. I, however, vehemently beg to differ. Each sunset in Tamarindo felt distinct, a singular work of art crafted anew each evening. The way the light played off the Pacific waves, the silhouetted surfers catching their last rides, the communal quiet that fell over the beach as everyone paused to witness the spectacle—these moments were truly captivating.
Our perfect evenings in Tamarindo always involved finding a prime spot on the beach, a cold drink in hand, and simply watching the sky ignite with fiery oranges, deep purples, and soft pinks. It’s a ritual that forces you to slow down, to appreciate the present moment, and to reflect on the day’s adventures. There’s a reason Costa Rican sunsets are legendary; they are not merely visual treats but profound experiences that soothe the soul and leave a lasting impression.
Gastronomic Delights: Savoring Tamarindo’s Flavors
As a devoted foodie, exploring Tamarindo’s culinary landscape was a highlight of our trip. The town offers an incredible array of fresh, vibrant dishes that perfectly complement its tropical setting. One of my absolute favorites were the Mango Fish Lettuce Wraps – light, incredibly fresh, and bursting with the sweet tang of mango, tender fish, and crisp lettuce. They were the ideal meal for a warm, sunny day, epitomizing the healthy and flavorful nature of Costa Rican cuisine. Beyond specific dishes, the drinks scene was equally enticing. Fruity cocktails, like the classic Pina Colada, flowed easily, perfect for unwinding after a day of surfing or exploring. The freshness of the local fruits made every sip a delight.
Smoothies are ubiquitous in Tamarindo’s cafes and restaurants, and for good reason. On a 100-degree day, a perfectly blended, ice-cold smoothie made with local fruits like passion fruit, guanabana, or pineapple, truly hits the spot. They are not only delicious but also a fantastic way to hydrate and enjoy the natural bounty of Costa Rica. Beyond the specific dishes we tried, Tamarindo boasts an impressive variety of dining options, from casual local “sodas” serving traditional Gallo Pinto and fresh seafood, to upscale international restaurants. Every meal was an opportunity to savor the rich flavors and fresh ingredients that define the Costa Rican culinary experience.
The Essential Recharge: Prioritizing Couple Time
Beyond the stunning scenery and thrilling adventures, one profound takeaway from this trip was the immense importance of Mike and I getting away alone. For parents, life often becomes a whirlwind of work, children’s schedules, and daily commitments, leaving little room for reconnecting as a couple. If you have children and haven’t had a vacation alone with your significant other in a while, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Even if it’s only for a few days, the investment in time and money away from the kids is immeasurably worth it for the positive impact it has on your relationship.
Taking this time for ourselves allows us to recharge, remember why we fell in love, and strengthen our bond. I truly believe that we become better, more patient, and more present parents when we make time for our individual well-being and, crucially, for our relationship. It’s about finding balance in the beautiful chaos of life. Stepping back, breathing deeply, and appreciating each other, as well as the incredible beauty surrounding us, is fundamental to nurturing a healthy and fulfilling life together. Tamarindo, with its relaxed pace and romantic sunsets, provided the perfect backdrop for this essential reconnection.

By the end of our five days, while I was certainly ready to return home and snuggle my children, it was undeniably a perfect trip.
