It has been a couple of weeks since I returned from my incredible European adventure, and I’ve finally had the opportunity to fully process the myriad of breathtaking sights and unforgettable moments we encountered. The lingering effects of jet lag have, thankfully, finally subsided. I had forgotten how much time it takes for the body to adjust to such a significant time difference, especially when you factor in the demands of work and chasing a lively toddler. Last week saw me succumbing to sleep by 7:30 PM, rising with the dawn at 5 AM, unable to sleep any longer. This morning, however, snapped me back to reality as my alarm blared at 6:30 AM, prompting a few desperate pushes of the snooze button. It’s astonishing how quickly one can fall back into the rhythm of daily life!

For those who have been following my updates on Instagram or reading my blog over the past few weeks, you might have caught glimpses of our remarkable trip. My primary goal with this post is to compile our experiences and memories, creating a lasting digital chronicle of our journey. My husband and I are avid photographers, so naturally, I have an extensive collection of images. Beyond just pictures, I believe that sharing our stories and insights from the trip offers a more profound way to document and relive these precious moments. Our immersive 12-day European adventure commenced in the vibrant city of Munich, Germany. Our journey began with a convenient overnight direct flight from Chicago to Munich. My mission during the 9-hour flight was to catch some much-needed sleep, a feat I surprisingly accomplished despite being a notoriously light sleeper. Arriving in Munich, we swiftly navigated the airport, collected our substantial backpacking gear, and made our way to our hotel. Though the weather during our stay in Germany was a bit rainy, it did little to dampen our spirits or deter us from exploring the city’s countless wonders.

Bavarian Culinary Delights and Beer Culture in Munich

When you envision the food and drink scene in Munich, what immediately comes to mind? For many, including myself, the answer is undoubtedly pretzels and beer. While I must confess that, despite my half-German heritage, I’m not typically a huge fan of traditional German cuisine due to its often heavy nature and my preference for less meat, the beer in Germany is truly exceptional. As expected, the local brews are incredibly flavorful and satisfying. But if there’s one culinary item that surpassed all expectations, it was the pretzels – these aren’t your average pretzels! Some were literally as large as my head, offering a delightful chewiness and perfectly salted crust that quickly became a staple of our Munich experience.

A true highlight for us was discovering the incredible cheese spread served alongside pretzels at several establishments. This creamy, savory dip, known as Obatzda, quickly became an obsession for both my husband and me. We couldn’t get enough of it! After a bit of online research, we believe we’ve found a recipe for Obatzda here that I am eager to try and recreate in my own kitchen very soon. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the hearty pretzels and a fantastic example of authentic Bavarian flavors.

No visit to Munich is truly complete without immersing oneself in the legendary beer hall culture. These iconic establishments are more than just places to drink; they are vibrant social hubs, steeped in history and tradition. We made sure to stop at a few, experiencing firsthand the lively atmosphere, communal tables, and the sheer joy of sharing a massive stein of Bavarian beer with locals and fellow travelers alike. The energy is infectious, often amplified by live Oompah bands playing traditional German music, creating an unforgettable sensory experience.

Exploring Munich’s Vibrant Markets and Green Spaces

Beyond its renowned beer culture, Munich offers a wealth of diverse attractions. We were particularly charmed by its fantastic market scene. The Viktualienmarkt, in particular, is an absolute paradise for food lovers and souvenir hunters. This bustling open-air market, with its origins stretching back to the early 19th century, is a sensory feast. Strolling through its aisles, we discovered an incredible array of fresh fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, exotic spices, and unique gifts. One standout feature was the olive bar – a true haven for olive enthusiasts like myself! The market also boasts numerous food stalls where you can sample local delicacies, making it a perfect spot for a casual lunch or a quick snack while soaking in the local atmosphere.

If you ever find yourself in Munich, a visit to the Englischer Garten is an absolute must. This sprawling urban park, larger than New York’s Central Park, offers a serene escape from the city bustle. It’s a wonderland of lush green trees, meandering streams, and tranquil pathways perfect for a leisurely stroll or a bike ride. One of its most iconic and surprisingly unique features is the river surfing – yes, surfing in the middle of a city! We discovered two spots where people expertly ride the standing waves in the Eisbach river, and it was truly captivating to watch. Within the Englischer Garten, you’ll also find the charming Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower) beer garden, a perfect spot to relax with a cold brew under the shade of ancient trees.

Fairy-Tale Castles and Bavarian Countryside in Fussen

After our exciting time in Munich, we embarked on a picturesque two-hour train journey to Fussen, Germany. This charming town, nestled in the Bavarian Alps, is the gateway to two of Germany’s most famous and enchanting castles: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. The train ride itself was a delightful experience, offering stunning views of the pristine Bavarian countryside – rolling hills, serene lakes, and quaint villages painted a picture of idyllic tranquility, providing a stark yet beautiful contrast to the urban vibrancy of Munich. Seeing these magnificent castles up close was nothing short of breathtaking. Neuschwanstein, often cited as the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle, truly lives up to its fairy-tale reputation with its intricate design and dramatic mountain backdrop. Hohenschwangau, the childhood residence of King Ludwig II, offers its own unique historical charm and equally impressive views. Exploring their grounds and learning about their rich history was a deeply immersive and relaxing experience, allowing us to truly appreciate the region’s natural beauty and historical grandeur.

Top Munich and Fussen Travel Recommendations

While Germany undoubtedly offers a myriad of exciting activities and destinations, based on our two unforgettable days in Munich and Fussen, here are my top suggestions for an incredible experience:

• Explore Munich City Center: Dedicate ample time to wander through the city center, marveling at its stunning churches and grand historical buildings. Consider joining a walking or bike tour to gain deeper insights into Munich’s rich history and vibrant culture. Even if it rains, like it did during our visit, exploring on your own offers a charming perspective.
• Indulge in Bavarian Gastronomy: Make sure to visit at least one traditional beer hall like the renowned Hofbräuhaus to savor a hearty beer and, of course, those magnificent pretzels paired with the irresistible Obatzda cheese spread. For a delightful meal, try places like Der Pschorr, where we enjoyed a truly delicious roasted chicken.
• Relax at Englischer Garten: Take a long, refreshing stroll through the expansive Englischer Garten. This urban oasis is perfect for unwinding. Don’t forget to stop at the Chinesischer Turm beer garden for a relaxing drink, and then continue your walk to witness the unique river surfers in action.
• Discover Viktualienmarkt: Immerse yourself in the bustling atmosphere of the Viktualienmarkt. It’s an excellent place to shop for fresh fruits, vegetables, local delicacies, and unique souvenirs, offering a true taste of Munich’s local life.
• Day Trip to Fussen and the Castles: Plan a captivating day trip to Fussen, Germany. This journey will reward you with stunning views of the Bavarian countryside and the chance to explore the world-famous fairy-tale castles: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau.
