Deliciously Healthy Homemade Banana Oatmeal Cookies
Are you searching for a wholesome yet utterly delicious treat that the whole family will adore? Look no further than these incredible Homemade Banana Oatmeal Cookies! They’re not just a dessert; they’re a convenient snack, a perfect breakfast accompaniment, and an excellent way to use up those ripe bananas sitting on your counter. My kids consistently rank these at the very top of their favorite cookie list, and for good reason—they’re soft, wonderfully chewy, and packed with natural goodness.
Unlike many traditional cookie recipes that rely heavily on refined sugars and white flour, these banana oatmeal cookies offer a lighter, healthier alternative without compromising on flavor. We combine the natural sweetness of ripe bananas with wholesome oat flour, a touch of coconut sugar, creamy almond butter, and heart-healthy coconut oil to create a delightful confection. The addition of rolled oats and optional chocolate chips makes them irresistible to both adults and children alike. They stand out beautifully from classic favorites like Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies or Peanut Butter Pretzel Chocolate Chip Cookies, offering a distinct and equally satisfying experience.
One of my favorite aspects of this recipe is how perfectly it utilizes those overly ripe bananas that might otherwise go to waste. It’s a common scenario in many kitchens: you buy a bunch of bananas, and a few inevitably ripen faster than you can eat them. Instead of tossing them, transform them into these moist, flavorful cookies! Beyond cookies, ripe bananas are fantastic in recipes like Banana Oatmeal Muffins and even Pineapple Smoothies, proving their versatility in healthy baking and blending. These banana oatmeal cookies are not only a fantastic on-the-go snack but also freeze beautifully, making them perfect for meal prepping healthy treats for busy weeks ahead.

The Power of Key Ingredients in Our Banana Oatmeal Cookies
Each ingredient in these Homemade Banana Oatmeal Cookies plays a crucial role, not just in flavor and texture, but also in contributing to their healthy profile. Understanding the benefits of what goes into your baking makes enjoying these cookies even sweeter.
- Oat Flour: The Gluten-Free Wonder
Our recipe proudly features oat flour, a fantastic grain flour derived directly from oats. If you can’t find it at your local grocery store, don’t worry – it’s incredibly easy to make your own oat flour at home using a blender or food processor. Oat flour is a nutritional powerhouse, offering more protein and fiber than traditional wheat flour, while also being naturally lower in carbohydrates. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking for gluten-free options or simply to boost the nutritional content of their baked goods. It contributes to the soft, tender crumb of these cookies, giving them a comforting, hearty texture.
- Coconut Sugar: Nature’s Sweetener
We opt for coconut sugar in this recipe, a natural sweetener that comes from the sap of coconut palm trees. It boasts a rich, caramel-like flavor that complements the bananas and oats beautifully. While it’s still a sugar, many consider it a slightly healthier alternative to regular granulated sugar due to its lower glycemic index, meaning it causes a slower rise in blood sugar levels. If coconut sugar isn’t available, standard granulated sugar can be used as a direct substitute, though it will subtly alter the flavor and nutritional profile.
- Baking Powder: The Lift You Need
Baking powder is a leavening agent that helps our cookies achieve their perfect rise and a wonderfully soft, slightly airy texture. It reacts when mixed with wet ingredients and again when exposed to heat in the oven, ensuring your cookies aren’t too dense.
- Nut Butter: Creaminess and Flavor Depth
Almond butter is my go-to for these cookies, adding a delightful creaminess, a boost of healthy fats, and a subtle nutty flavor. It also acts as a binder, helping to hold the cookies together. However, feel free to experiment with other nut butters like cashew butter or even peanut butter. Each will impart its unique flavor profile, allowing you to customize the cookies to your liking. Just ensure it’s a natural, unsweetened variety for the best results.
- Coconut Oil: Moisture and Binding
Melted coconut oil is key to the soft consistency and delicate texture of these cookies. As a healthy fat, it helps keep the cookies moist and tender, preventing them from drying out. It also contributes to the binding of ingredients, ensuring a cohesive and satisfying bite. Be sure to melt it gently before incorporating it into the wet ingredients.
- Bananas: The Heart of the Cookie
The star of the show! This recipe calls for one small mashed banana. The riper the banana, the better, as it provides natural sweetness, moisture, and a wonderful depth of flavor. Overripe bananas, identifiable by their brown spots, are ideal because their starches have converted to sugars, making them sweeter and easier to mash. They are also packed with potassium and other essential nutrients, making these cookies a genuinely nourishing treat.
- Old Fashioned Oats: Texture and Fiber
We use old fashioned oats (also known as rolled oats) in this recipe. These whole grain oats add a fantastic chewy texture to the cookies and are a significant source of dietary fiber, promoting digestive health and helping you feel full longer. They contribute to the rustic, homemade feel of the cookies.
- Chocolate Chips: The Irresistible Touch (Optional)
While these cookies are delicious on their own, chocolate chips elevate them to another level of decadence. You can use semi-sweet, dark chocolate chips, or even chopped chocolate bars. Dark chocolate offers a richer flavor and additional antioxidants, while semi-sweet provides a classic, comforting taste. Feel free to adjust the quantity or omit them entirely if you prefer a simpler banana oatmeal cookie.

How to Make These Delightful Banana Oatmeal Cookies: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating these healthy banana oatmeal cookies is a straightforward and enjoyable process. Follow these steps for perfect results every time:
1. Preheat and Prepare
Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. This crucial step prevents sticking and makes for easy cleanup, ensuring your cookies slide right off the tray.
2. Combine Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the oat flour, coconut sugar, baking powder, cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly to ensure they are well combined and the leavening agent is evenly distributed. This ensures consistent rising and flavor throughout your cookies.

3. Incorporate Wet Ingredients
Next, add the almond butter, melted coconut oil, mashed banana, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Mix until just combined and a soft dough forms. Be careful not to overmix; overworking the dough can lead to tougher cookies. Mix until the ingredients are just incorporated, ensuring a tender crumb.

4. Fold in Oats and Chocolate
Gently fold in the old fashioned oats and your choice of chopped chocolate or chocolate chips. Stir just enough to distribute them evenly throughout the dough. The oats add a fantastic texture, and the chocolate provides that irresistible sweet burst.

5. Chill the Dough (Do Not Skip!)
Cover the bowl with plastic film and refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes. This step is crucial! Chilling allows the oat flour to fully hydrate and the fats in the coconut oil and almond butter to solidify, preventing the cookies from spreading too much during baking and ensuring a chewy texture. Without chilling, your cookies might be too flat and crumbly.
6. Scoop and Shape
After chilling, scoop the dough into 12 even balls. You can use a cookie scoop or simply wet your hands to prevent sticking. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each, and gently flatten them slightly with the back of a spoon or your fingers. This helps achieve a more uniform cookie shape.

7. Bake to Golden Perfection
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the centers are set. The exact baking time may vary depending on your oven, so keep an eye on them. You want them to be firm but still soft in the middle.
8. Cool Completely
Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool completely on the baking sheet or a wire rack. They will be quite soft when they first come out, but they will firm up and develop their characteristic chewiness as they cool. Resist the urge to move them too soon!

Mastering the Art of Banana Oatmeal Cookies: Tips for Success
To ensure your Homemade Banana Oatmeal Cookies turn out perfectly every time, keep these valuable tips in mind:
- Embrace Overripe Bananas: The browner, the better! Bananas with ample brown spots are ideal because their starches have converted into natural sugars, providing maximum sweetness and moisture. This also makes them easier to mash into a smooth consistency, which is crucial for the cookie’s texture.
- The Chilling Advantage: Do not skip the chilling step! Refrigerating the dough for at least 30 minutes (or even longer, up to an hour) is vital. It allows the oat flour to fully absorb moisture and the fats in the coconut oil and nut butter to solidify. This prevents the cookies from spreading too thin during baking, resulting in a thicker, chewier cookie.
- Avoid Overmixing: Once you’ve added the wet ingredients to the dry, mix until just combined. Overmixing can develop the gluten in the oat flour (even though it’s gluten-free, overworking can still affect texture), leading to tough rather than tender cookies. A soft, slightly sticky dough is what you’re aiming for.
- Parchment Paper is Your Friend: Always line your baking sheet with parchment paper. This ensures that your cookies won’t stick, makes for easy removal, and simplifies cleanup. Silicone baking mats also work wonderfully.
- The Patience of Cooling: It’s tempting to dive in as soon as they come out of the oven, but resist! These cookies are very soft when hot and need time to set and firm up. Allowing them to cool completely on the baking sheet or a wire rack is essential for them to develop their perfect chewy texture and prevent them from falling apart.
- Customize Your Cookies with Variations:
- Add Nuts: Enhance the crunch and flavor by folding in a handful of chopped walnuts, pecans, or even macadamia nuts.
- Dried Fruits: For a different kind of sweetness and chewiness, consider adding dried cranberries, raisins, or chopped dates.
- Spice It Up: A pinch of nutmeg, a dash of ginger, or even a touch of allspice can add warmth and complexity to the flavor profile.
- Different Chocolates: Experiment with white chocolate chips, milk chocolate chunks, or even a swirl of peanut butter chips for a unique twist.
Storage and Serving Suggestions
These Homemade Banana Oatmeal Cookies are fantastic for preparing ahead. Store baked cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. For longer storage, these cookies freeze exceptionally well. Place cooled cookies in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw at room temperature or gently warm them in the microwave for a fresh-baked taste.
Enjoy these versatile cookies in various ways: they make a wholesome breakfast with your morning coffee or tea, a satisfying afternoon snack with a glass of milk, or a delightful light dessert. You can even serve them warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream for an extra special treat.
